ISO 19011:2018 defines an audit as a "systematic, impartial and documented system for obtaining audit proof [information, statements of point or other data that happen to be appropriate and verifiable] and analyzing it objectively to ascertain the extent to which the audit conditions [a list of policies, methods or specifications] are fulfilled."
